Step 1
Find a physician to perform the dermabrasion treatment. A doctor can evaluate if you are a good candidate for the treatment. People with skin allergies and darker skin tones are typically not recommended for dermabrasion.
-
Step 2
Check your insurance coverage. Since dermabrasion can be used to treat certain skin abnormalities, you may be eligible to have the procedure covered.
-
Step 3
Follow any pre-treatment directions from your doctor. Your physician may have special directions regarding how you care for your skin prior to surgery. You also must stop smoking a week or 2 before the procedure.
-
Step 4
Expect to be given a local anesthetic as well as a sedative. Your face will be numbed during the treatment and you will be relaxed from the sedative that was administered.
-
Step 5
Notice the surgeon scraping away the outer layers of your skin with a surgical instrument that resembles a wire brush. They scrape away at the skin until the wrinkles or scars have diminished in appearance.
-
Step 6
Allow the surgeon to dress and treat the area following the procedure. This helps the skin heal properly.
-
Step 7
Adhere to all aftercare instructions. You need to apply a medicated ointment to the area and avoid shaving or using certain skincare products.
