The High Jump requires speed and a deft agility to help negotiate maneuvering your body over the High Jump Bar. While it looks simple, there are actually rules one must specifically follow when completing the High Jump. Here are the rules.

From Quick Guide: Track and Field
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take-off from a single foot. When initiating your High Jump, you must leave the ground from a single foot. If you take off from 2, the jump will be disqualified.

  2. Step 2

Stay clear of the ground without first clearing the bar. This seems somewhat obvious, but you are not allowed to touch the ground or landing area anywhere beyond the uprights without first clearing the bar. This would come into play if you accidentally tripped and fell onto the mat at the last moment. That attempt would be over.

  3. Step 3

Get off the mat. If the bar falls off the uprights after you have completed the jump, but before you leave the mat area, it is considered a failure. So once you complete your jump, move off the mat quickly without disturbing the uprights.

  4. Step 4

Receive 3 attempts. You get 3 attempts to clear the bar at each height. After 3 consecutive failures at a given height you will be disqualified from the mat.

  5. Step 5

Keep track of failures. At the end of the competition if 2 or more people have cleared the maximum height, then the person with the least number of failures wins. If that number is again equal, the person with the least number of failures for the overall competition wins. If that is also a tie, a jump off may be held with the person who clears the height declared the winner.

  6. Step 6

Strive for the highest jump. The main rule is that the person who clears the highest height when jumping over the bar wins the competition.

on 8/29/2007 Step 3 is simply a myth, getting off of the mat quicker actually has no difference between whether the jump is made or missed. It is completely on the judges whether or not the bar fell off because you hit it, or outside forces like wind, rain, etc.
