If you've visited the Self Help section of any bookstore lately, you might have needed a map. Since the Oprah generation, this genre has seen an explosion of titles. Although there are a huge number of books available, the reader with an organized approach to the Self Help section of the bookstore is likely to walk away with a life-altering purchase.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Choose a subject. If you're not sure what type of help you need, or which issue to focus on, browse the shelves for topic ideas. Most bookstores arrange the self-help books by subject, making this an easy task. You'll see books offering advice on everything from addiction recovery to coping with death.
Step2
Narrow your search quickly and remain focused. Even if many of the topics interest you, stick with one. Remember, you can always investigate a new topic on your next trip to the bookstore. Once you've chosen a topic, ignore all other topics for now.
Step3
Pass over any books that make unbelievable claims. Books with jackets that scream unrealistic promises are there for the impulse buyer, not the discerning shopper.
Step4
Consider the author's credentials. When it comes to self-help, you want a book written by someone who knows more than you do about the chosen subject. A book about overcoming addiction written by a psychologist is equally as valuable as a book on dog-training written by a veterinarian. Conversely, don't bother with an addiction book written by a veterinarian.
Step5
Look for exercises or assignments in the book. Reading about dressmaking does not make you a seamstress, nor will reading about overcoming depression make you happy. You need a book that will enhance the information presented with practical, how-to activities that can help you apply the information to your life.
Step6
Match the length of the book to your commitment. Be honest with yourself about how much effort you're willing to put forth. An 800-page self-help book won't teach you the art of meditation if you only read the first 300 pages.
Step7
Re-read authors you know. If you've read a self-help book that you thought was good, see if the same author writes on other subjects. Finding an author you connect with can make reading a self-help book more enjoyable, like talking with an old friend.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your time at the bookstore. Plan to spend at least an hour selecting your self-help book.
