Boiled crawfish is a popular dish in the south, but to make it you need quite a few crawfish. If you want to catch your own crawfish, you will need more than a dip net and a water source. Learn the best way to catch crawfish with these following steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Crawfish trap
  • Bait

Step1
Get a crawfish trap. Buy these at some fishing stores and online. If you want to catch a lot of crawfish, you will need more than one trap.
Step2
Buy some bait for the crawfish trap. You can use fresh fish cut into pieces or buy a manufactured bait. Either will work and both are inexpensive, but the manufactured bait is less messy to handle.
Step3
Find a body of water like a lake or a pond. Almost every area has crawfish, but the further south you go the larger the quantity. Crawfish prefer shallow, muddy water.
Step4
Set your traps to catch the crawfish. You can walk or throw them into the water, or travel by boat to set them out if you have a lot of traps. Make sure to secure the bait inside the traps before setting them.
Step5
Pick up the traps after a few hours to check for crawfish. Good bait should lure many crawfish into the traps. Bring them in still in the traps, or dump them into sacks or containers and set the traps out again.
