Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide how many 5 gallon containers you will be able to use. Purchase your containers; you can use pots or even buckets. Get potting soil designed for vegetables.

  2. Step 2

Buy plants from a nursery. Each bucket will hold 1 plant. Plants that do well in container gardens: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squash, leaf lettuce, green onions, onions, green beans, radishes, parsley and other herbs and cucumbers.

  3. Step 3

Fill the buckets with soil, leaving a hole for the plant.

  4. Step 4

Squeeze the plastic pot until the plant slides out of the container. Separate the root ball. Place the plant in the hole. Fill in the dirt around the roots and stem. The soil should come just below the first leaves on the plant.

  5. Step 5

Soak the soil thoroughly. Check the soil daily to ensure that it is still damp. Push your finger in the soil to get a good idea of the moistness of the soil. Water when the soil is no longer damp.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your containers have drainage holes in the bottom.
  • Vegetable container gardens tend to need water more often than other gardens.
