How to Create a Windsock

It's Saturday afternoon, and the kids are bored. Making something always keeps them busy, and it's fun too. If you're looking for a quick and easy craft, make a windsock. You can construct a windsock with just a few materials that you probably already have around your home. Follow these steps, and you'll see that creating a windsock is a breeze.

Things You'll Need

  • Construction paper
  • Tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • String
  • Hole punch
  • Crayons or markers
  • Stapler
  • Ruler
  • Stickers (if desired)

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of construction paper into a rectangle 6 inches wide by 18 inches in length. Decorate with markers, crayons or stickers, or cut shapes from the remaining paper and glue them on.

    • 2

Make a ring by gluing or stapling the ends of the paper together. You should have a cylindrical shape when finished-this is the body of the windsock. Make sure your design faces out.

    • 3

Cut tissue paper into strips 2 feet in length. Staple or glue them around one end of the paper cylinder. Space them about 1 inch apart.

    • 4

Punch 4 holes evenly spaced apart around the top of the cylinder. Tie string through the four holes; tie in double-knots to keep string from slipping through holes. Then tie all 4 pieces of string together at the top to make a handle. This is how you will hang your windsock.

    • 5

Hang your windsock outside in a place where it will not get wet, but in a spot where the wind will catch it. Now you'll see which way the wind is blowing.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can make the cylindrical body of the windsock from an empty, cardboard ice cream container or from a tin can for a sturdier windsock.
