Safely moving your houseplants from one place to another is much like moving your pets. This task can be done without adverse reactions if the transportation is done properly. The better care you take of your plants during the move, the more easily they can adjust to their new home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Transporting Indoor Plants in Cold Climate

  1. Step 1

Turn the car on and warm it up. Plants need to ride in a warm vehicle.

  2. Step 2

Wrap your plants up in paper bags or newspapers before taking them outside to the vehicle. Walking them to the vehicle for a brief moment in the cold can severely damage your plants.

  3. Step 3

Keep the leaves and stems away from the cold windows of the vehicle. Cold can burn the leaves.

  4. Transporting Indoor Plants in a Hot Climate

  5. Step 1

Cool the vehicle down with the air-conditioner before you place the plants in the car.

  6. Step 2

Try not to let your houseplants overheat from the time you take them from your former home to the new home.

  7. Step 3

Block the sun from coming in through the windows. Sun cannot beat down on the plants. Air conditioning is cooling but it does not block the sun.

  8. Step 4

Drive straight to your destination. Stopping for errands on the way can raise temperatures to unreasonable levels in just a few short minutes.

  9. Acclimating Houseplants to Their New Environment

  10. Step 1

Increase or decrease the light gradually according to your houseplants' former home.

  11. Step 2

Make their new home as much like their old one as possible.

  12. Step 3

Fertilize and water the houseplants at least 3 days after the move. Give the houseplants time to adjust.

Tips & Warnings
  • Houseplants should always ride in a climate-controlled vehicle.
  • Unprotected houseplants suffer in hot and cold weather.
  • Avoid watering the plants before the move. Keep the planters slightly dry to avoid water spillage.
  • Do not leave your plants in a hot car.
  • Hot weather can kill your houseplants fast.
