Taking a road trip is one of life's greatest pleasures. It's exhilarating to get in your car and set out on an adventure. Many people just decide to drive for a couple of days and see where they end up. Others prefer to create a detailed trip itinerary. Regardless of your road trip style, there are several things you can do to plan a great road trip.

From Quick Guide: Gas Economical Road Trips
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure your vehicle is ready for the trip. If it's been awhile since your last maintenance appointment, you may want to take it in for a regular tune-up, especially if you plan on driving a great distance.

  2. Step 2

Plan a trip budget. You'll need to have enough money for gas, food, overnight accommodations and emergencies. Remember to factor in the length of your trip and how many people are going.

  3. Step 3

Remember to bring a map. If you're the type who likes a structured trip, you'll undoubtedly have a map ready. However, even people who like to just jump in the car and go should bring a map along. Being lost for hours can be frustrating and even frightening.

  4. Step 4

Pack your suitcase. Think about where you're going and what you'll need along the way.

  5. Step 5

Bring an ample supply of your favorite music. If you have any passengers, find out what type of music they prefer, too.

  6. Step 6

    Hit the road!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use your judgment. There is a wonderful sense of freedom and independence that comes with taking a spontaneous road trip. But, it's important to stay safe. Follow your instincts and stay away from situations that don't seem right to you.
