Things You'll Need:
- Pencil and paper
- Plant catalog
-
Step 1
Grab your pencil. Designing your scented garden on paper will save you time, energy and money later. This approach allows you to change your mind and rearrange your plants until you're sure the design is perfect.
-
Step 2
Do your footwork. Visit gardens in your neighborhood and around your town, find plants whose scents you love and make a list of their names. These are the plants you will want to include in your scented garden design.
-
Step 3
Research your chosen plants. Take your list of plants and look them up in catalogs or magazines to find out how big they will get and what their ideal growing conditions are. It is important that these conditions match those of your garden's location.
-
Step 4
Place climbers, trees and/or tall shrubs at the back of your scented garden. These provide the structure that supports the rest of your design. Some particularly fragrant options are: fruit trees, lilacs and honeysuckle.
-
Step 5
Add smaller and perennial shrubs to fill out your design. Roses, carnations and lily of the valley are only a few of the plants that can add a wide variety of scents to your garden.
-
Step 6
Use annuals to fill empty spaces and add scents throughout the growing season. Nicotiana is a very sweet smelling annual that does well through most garden zones.
-
Step 7
Tuck a few herbs into empty corners. Do your research first, some herbs become very large, but the fragrances they release, even when not in bloom, are a great addition to any scented garden.
