How to Make Fiberglass Tubs Look New

Audrey Farley

When they are not cleaned regularly, fiberglass tubs become gritty and gross. Mold and residue can cause discoloration, and water spots can cause the fiberglass to rust over time. However, fiberglass is easily cleaned and restored to good condition.

Fiberglass tubs require daily upkeep to stay pristine.

If you have a fiberglass tub, you can make it look new again with just a few simple steps.

  1. Use a soft sponge or cloth to clean the tub. Avoid abrasive devices, such as scouring pads or bristled brushes, which can scratch the fiberglass. Scrub in circular motions to most effectively lift residue from the tub.

  2. Use a bathroom cleaner approved for fiberglass use to clean the tub. Typically, avoid powder detergents. Spray on the entire tub, even areas that appear clean, to prevent mold and mildew from accumulating. Scrub with a sponge. Thoroughly rinse the cleaning products, as soap residue can cause mold and mildew.

  3. Prepare a paste of baking soda and water to use on problem areas, such as excessive scum build-up or residue, that you are unable to remove with ordinary cleaning. Use one cup of baking soda for every gallon of water. Mix thoroughly and apply to spots or stains. Let the paste sit for five minutes. Scrub the paste into the stain with a sponge and rinse. Repeat this step as necessary until the residue of the stain is fully lifted.

  4. Treat mold with bleach. Mix one part bleach with ten parts water. Pour the solution directly onto the mold spots, and allow five minutes to soak. Rinse thoroughly.

  5. Treat calcium, lime or rust with a product specially designed to remove these issues after confirming that the product is safe for use on fiberglass. Spray the product on the spots, and scrub with a sponge. Rinse thoroughly to prevent discoloration.

  6. Tip

To keep the fiberglass tub looking new, towel dry the tub after each use to prevent water spots and mold. Spray the tub with an after-shower cleaner after each use. This will prevent scum build-up. To make your own spray, add 1/3-cup of white vinegar to a 32 ounce spray bottle and then fill with water. Keep the spray bottle handy for use after each shower or bath.
