Write a Couplet

Writing poetry is a wonderful way to express yourself. If you are new to rhyming poetry it is best to start with something simple such as a couplet. A couplet is a small portion of a poem consisting of two consecutive lines that rhyme. Writing couplets is a fun way to practice poetry.

Instructions

    • 1

Settle on whether or not the couplet will be the entire poem or if it will be part of a longer poem. Select the topic and tone of the poem. Decide on the length of the individual lines and how many syllables each line will have.

    • 2

Write the idea you wish to convey in a variety of ways, each time ending the line with a different word. Count the syllables in each line and be sure to follow a pattern that creates a natural rhythm.

    • 3

Create the second line of the couplet. Compose a variety of lines that end with the different first lines you have already written.

    • 4

Recite each couplet aloud, listening carefully to the rhythm and flow of the words. Read aloud to a friend if possible and ask for your friend's opinion.

    • 5

Pick the pair that best conveys your idea and has the best rhythm. Repeat the process if your poem will contain more than one couplet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Write frequently to become better at poetry. Practice will improve your technique.

  • Clap the syllables aloud to ensure that you are counting them accurately.

  • Make sure the ending words actually rhyme and are not just similar.
