Also known as a bowknot, a bow is a way of convoluting a line so that the end result is a figure eight shape - a knot with two loops on either side. It is the preferred method to tie shoe laces. Tying ribbons for decorative purposes requires extra tweaking so that symmetry is achieved. Tying a bow is not a difficult skill and most people can tie bows after a few minutes of instruction.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a loop with the ribbon so that the two ends cross in the middle. Put it down on a surface. Then twist the loop 180 degrees, clockwise.

  2. Step 2

Form a loop with one side of the ribbon. Make sure that it does not twist.

  3. Step 3

Repeat Step 2 with the other side of the ribbon. Try to keep your loops symmetric.

  4. Step 4

Cross the two loops and hold them together with your fingers. Pull the top loop through the third hole that has formed under the two loops.

  5. Step 5

Pull the two loops apart until the third hole disappears to finish tying the bow. If the bowknot looks messy, that's okay.

  6. Step 6

Neaten the bow. Make adjustments so that the loops are symmetrical and the ends of the ribbon have the same length. You may need to loosen the knot to make these adjustments.

  7. Step 7

Redo the bow if necessary. To untie it, pull the ribbon ends apart. Then tie the bow again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your loops symmetrical from the start.
