Converting an unused spot in your backyard into a money-making garden can be fun, pretty and profitable. If you love to grow plants and produce, think of these as money crops that can provide a small extra income. To make money with your backyard garden, all you need are the tools, time and a green thumb.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Butterflies
  • Money plant
  • Feng Shui
  • Herbs
  • Outdoor garden spot

Step1
Grow herbs. Herbs like oregano, dill and especially basil are always popular with those looking for that fresh flavor and homegrown taste that only comes from fresh picked.
Step2
Teach the kids about money. Even youngsters can learn about money by growing their own small garden. They will learn about the market and growing for profit by growing plants not readily available in their area. Less common varieties like Purple Head Cauliflower are easy to grow and provide a welcome change in the diet. Zucchini is one of the best growing plants in the squash family. Kohlrabi is a good choice of greens.
Step3
Practice feng shui to make money. Yes, even the garden can benefit from the ancient art of placement and arrangement to produce harmony. Choose a plant that represents money to you, like roses. Lay out a garden with feng shui to foster good growing conditions.
Step4
Attract butterflies. Butterfly gardens are more popular than ever. Plants like the butterfly bush and bee balm attract butterflies like crazy. Butterfly-attracting plants are the perfect money plant.
Step5
Grow a "real" money plant. Yes, a money plant exists. The "Lunaria Annua" is named for its silver dollar seeds that resemble giant coins. Too bad it doesn't sprout greenbacks or ready cash, but this plant is worth the money for its pretty purple flowers and seeds which add splash and color to your money garden. The money plant grows for two seasons in sun or part shade, and reaches 2-3-feet.
Step6
Sell your plants and produce. Check out local flea markets and farmers markets. Advertise your home-grown produce and plants in local papers. Online venues like Garden Nut offer classified listings of plant and produce growers by area.
