How to Save Money on Groceries

Saving on groceries is an easy way to cut down on your household expenses. Unlike the fixed payments on your car and mortgage, the cost of groceries tends to keep going up. To save on your monthly grocery bill, you only need to make a few simple adjustments.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy generic products. If a generic or store brand option is available, always choose it. Most of the time, both products use the same recipe and you are paying extra money for the name only.

  2. Step 2

Clip coupons. Go through your newspaper circulars and cut out any applicable coupons. To find even more coupons, go online to a website such as Coupon Cabin and print out their grocery coupons.

  3. Step 3

Look on the lower shelves. Many times shoppers will only buy products found at eye level. Cheaper stock is usually found on the lower shelves in grocery store aisles.

  4. Step 4

Eat before you go grocery shopping. You will spend less money at a grocery store if you shop when you are not hungry and are not tempted to buy more food.

  5. Step 5

Make a detailed list. Only purchase items that will be used in specific recipes that you plan to make.

  6. Step 6

Shop alone. Bringing along children or your spouse to the grocery store will make you spend more money on the items that they want that aren't on your list.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid grabbing any products at the checkout line. These products are usually high cost and placed to entice consumers to make last minute purchases.
  • Don't buy items that you feel that you should eat, but don't. If you hate cauliflower, don't bother paying for it.

on 9/3/2009 Check out this site I found that gives you free visa cards for grocery shopping as you normally do. I have been doing it for 4 months now and have received $100 in visa cards that I can use any where. www.getfreevisacards.com

on 5/6/2009 Great tips. Another alternitive to printing coupons is on Krogers web site. They let you download coupon to your shopping card. I hope other store start to do this soon. But don't go out of your way to buy something just for the coupon. A Coupon is only good if it is an item that you would need.

  • Beware of signs. Just because it says you will save money doesn't mean you will.
  • Check the sales and only use the coupons if you buy that product.
  • Keep track of items as you run out.
  • Keep the last grocery trip's list in your bag or wallet. If you don't have time to make a new one because you hit the market on the way home, you'll have a loose outline of staples your house probably uses on a regular basis.
