Visitors to the San Marcos River in Texasshould remember to pack their snorkel gear. The San Marcos is ideal for snorkeling, with its slow moving, crystal clear spring-fed water. Points of interest include several rare or endangered species, including the San Marcos Dwarf Salamander and the Fountain Darter. Its constant 72-degree water temperature makes the San Marcos River a refreshing summer-time treat the whole family will enjoy.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Swimwear
  • Snorkel, mask and fins
  • Beverages and snacks
  • Sunscreen

Step1
Exit Interstate 35 in San Marcos onto Aquarena Springs Drive, turn left onto Charles Austin Drive, then turn right behind Strahan Basketball Stadium and follow the signs to the San Marcos Lions Club parking lot.
Step2
Walk upriver from the parking lot and jump into the water. If you swim a little further upriver, you will find a small stream to your right. This leads to the headwaters at Aquarena Springs, where swimming is not allowed.
Step3
Float and look for the endangered San Marcos Salamander near the headwaters where the floor is rocky. This is a dark reddish-brown, small, slender salamander about 1 to 2 inches long.
Step4
Start floating down river using your snorkel. The clear waters allow you to examine the wildlife in excellent detail. Look for the small endangered Fountain Darter feeding near the reeds.
Step5
Swim and drift your way to the end at Rio Vista Park. Get out and follow the hike and bike trail back to the headwaters, or take the shuttle bus back.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring some pocket change to ride the shuttle bus back to the top of the river.
  • You must be a good swimmer before you attempt to snorkel.
