Change a Passive-Aggressive Nature at Work

Passive-aggressive behavior is often difficult to spot and, once identified, even more difficult to diffuse. When the conduct is apparent at work, the situation can become volatile and make for an uncomfortable work environment. A passive-aggressive coworker can erode the morale and productivity of a workplace. A pleasant workplace requires you to define the boundaries under which you can perform successfully - and that includes eliminating passive-aggressive behavior.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the problem first. Passive-aggressive people show hostility and aggression in very subtle ways. Watch the person carefully to define the behavior that is making you uncomfortable.

    • 2

Talk to your fellow worker about the behavior you have recognized and ask if you can help. Tell him or her that you have noticed this behavior and will not participate in the dance created by it. Do not try to cover up the behavior by making excuses for the person or doing the work that is shirked because of irresponsibility.

    • 3

Put all of your communication in writing when working on a project with a passive-aggressive person. Ask him or her to sign agreements so they can't back out later.

    • 4

Speak to your coworker in front of others so there are witnesses to the conversation. Also, enlist the help of your superiors if your own efforts do not work.

    • 5

Incorporate discussion of acceptable workplace behavior in team meetings and evaluations. Make sure company policy backs you up.

    • 6

Issue an ultimatum and encourage the person to seek outside help or be replaced. Offer suggestions of counselors who might be of assistance.
