How to Replace Power Supply in a Computer

Power supplies come in various shapes and sizes, as well as the different wattages they produce. The power supply must fit into the computer case, and it is important to obtain a replacement power supply that is rated the same or higher in wattage as the old power supply. If not, the system could have problems caused by insufficient wattage during operation. Here's how to replace a power supply in a standard mid-tower case.

Instructions

Step1
Disconnect the power cord and other peripherals from computer.
Step2
Remove the side panel from the computer case.
Step3
Disconnect all cables from the power supply that are connected to any devices in the case.
Step4
Remove the four screws that hold the power supply in place in the case.
Step5
Remove the old power supply from the case, paying attention so as not to dislodge any other cables or connections to other components.
Step6
Insert the new power supply into place in the case and secure with the four screws.
Step7
Connect the power cable to the mainboard and other components in the system.
Step8
Check to ensure that no cables or other connections have become dislodged during the process.
Step9
Replace side panel on the computer case.
Step10
Reconnect the power cord and connections to other peripherals and turn on computer.

  • Before buying a replacement power supply, ensure that it has the proper power connections for the type of mainboard that is in the case.
