An easy fix for when your computer is about out of storage space is to add a new hard drive to the system. Before buying a new hard drive, ensure that it is the correct type for the system, because once a computer product is opened it usually cannot be returned to the store.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Shut down the system and unplug the power cord, if necessary. Remove side panel or panels from case.
Step2
Ensure that new hard drive is set to be "Slave" and not "Master," and locate the empty drive bay for the new hard drive.
Step3
Insert the new hard drive into the empty bay and secure with screws or other attaching device provided by the manufacturer.
Step4
Connect the open connector on ribbon cable to the new hard drive. Connect the power supply cable to the new hard drive.
Step5
Replace side panel or panels. Plug in power cord and turn system on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure that no part of the ribbon cable is twisted more than absolutely necessary because this can cause operational problems.
  • Ribbon cables and power cables can normally be inserted only one way on a hard drive. If any resistance is felt, do not force the cable. Examine and determine the problem before proceeding with the installation of the new hard drive.
