Next to the Sun sign, the Ascendant (or rising sign) is the most telling aspect of an individual's chart. The rising sign is the astrological sign that was rising in the East when you were born. The ascendant sheds light on your outer personality, or how you are perceived by others. Along with your Sun and Moon signs, the Ascendant forms the most important trio of signs in your chart.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine your exact time of birth. If you have a copy of your birth certificate, this is easy. If not, ask your parents. If they don't know the exact time, try approximating the time to the closet hour. If time of birth is unknown, use 12 noon as birth time when figuring the ascendant.

  2. Step 2

Use an ascendant table from an astrology book or website. Find the time closet to your hour of birth. The sign listed under it is your rising sign.

  3. Step 3

Learn more about the meanings of the astrological signs in various ascendants and how they reveal idiosyncrasies in an individual's personality. For example, an Aquarius ascendant reveals that the person is a picky eater.

  4. Step 4

Subtract one hour from some do-it-yourself ascendant charts if Daylight Saving Time was in effect when you were born. Read instructions carefully before locating your ascendant or you may choose the wrong one.

  5. Step 5

Hire a professional astrologer to do an in-depth chart. Interpreting the astrological ascendant is a bit tricky, so a professional will be able to clarify some of the details for you.
