Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Drink plenty of fluids. It is commonly recommended that you drink eight glasses of water a day. But if you are constipated, increase your fluid intake from the recommended 64 oz. up to 90 or 100 oz. a day.
Step2
Eat roughage and fiber. You can increase your fiber intake with high-fiber cereal, leafy vegetables and grainy breads. Look for ways to sneak fiber into your diet, like adding fruit or cereal to salads.
Step3
Get plenty of exercise--even though you likely don't feel like it. Exercise will not only help move a bowel movement along when you are constipated, but it will also help you stay regular. Activities such as walking, jogging and swimming are most effective in relieving constipation.
Step4
Know when you need medical attention. If you are unable to relieve constipation naturally, it lasts for more than 2 weeks, is worsening or is a result of stress or tension, consult a physician. Also, chronic constipation could be a sign of a more serious condition, so see a physician if the condition persists.
