How to Get Rid of Bats in a House

Once bats establish a home in an attic, getting rid of them can be difficult. A thorough job of sealing any possible entry points will not only get rid of the bats you already have, but will keep others from roosting in your house as well.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use caulk, weather stripping or screen to seal all but one of the openings that are more than 1/4 inch wide in your attic or other area of your house where have roosted. The bats will be able to escape through the single opening you have left. Wait 3 to 5 days and then seal the final opening when bats are out feeding.

  2. Step 2

Hang permeable bags filled with mothballs in areas that cannot be sealed, and shine a light directly where bats are roosting. The combination of repellents will encourage existing bats to relocate and deter other bats from roosting there.

  3. Step 3

Open all doors and windows to the outside if a bat strays into the main part of your house. Turn off all of the lights in the room, and the bat should then fly outside.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never touch a bat. They carry rabies and will try to bite you if you grab them. If you do touch a bat or are bitten by one, get medical attention immediately.

on 11/9/2008 Bat exclusion should only be done during certain months of the year. Its not a good idea to do it at a time when mother bats may have babies. Also, 3-5 days may not be long enough for all the bats to exit. Its better to use one way netting than seal the cracks. If bats become trapped, they may either die or find their way into the interior of your house.
