Many houses come with a limited amount of closet space. However, everybody needs adequate closet space for storage and organization of clothing and household items.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get rid of stuff. Cluttered closets will limit your storage space. Remove the entire contents of the closet and go through each item to decide if you need it.

  2. Step 2

Add more shelves. Additional shelves allow you to store even more items inside a closet. Top shelves and stackable shelving should be installed.

  3. Step 3

Put in dual rods. To maximize closet space, pick closet organizers that contain dual rods that you can hang clothes upon. Home improvement stores have several models with double-decker rods.

  4. Step 4

Use plastic bins. Bins in different sizes can be put in the closet to store the items in an organized manner. Put labels on each bin to remember what was placed inside.

  5. Step 5

Purchase tie and hat racks. Hats and ties can take up a lot of space in a closet if not organized correctly. Shoe racks can also help maximize closet space.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep only enough hangers to hang all of your clothes. Too many extra hangers will take up a lot of your closet space.
  • Be sure to keep only seasonal clothing in your closet to maximize space. Other clothing should be stored.
  • Do not use plastic bags to store items. Plastic bags can cause discoloration to towels, linens and clothing.
