Use an Elbow Brace

Elbow braces can be a simple and relatively inexpensive way to treat pre-existing sports injuries and prevent future injuries from occurring. Once you've purchased an elbow brace, using it properly is important for it to fully benefit you. Here are some simple steps for using an elbow brace.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the elbow brace for defects. Ensure that the elbow brace is in good working order before using it in order to avoid risk of further injury. Look at the fabric of the brace to check for snags or stretched areas, and check that any extra parts, like hooks, clasps or stabilizers, are firmly attached and work properly.

    • 2

Extend your arm until it is straight. It will be easier to pull the elbow brace on with your arm at this angle than to try to pull it over your elbow when the elbow is bent at an angle. Hold your fingers out straight in front of you, and relax your arm muscles.

    • 3

Hold the brace in your opposite hand by the edge that will be around your upper arm once it is correctly positioned, and make sure it is properly rotated so that the correct side of the brace will be on the top and bottom of your arm.

    • 4

Pull the elbow brace firmly over your lower arm and elbow using one firm, smooth motion. Avoid jerking or tugging the brace as this will jar your muscles.

    • 5

Position the elbow brace so that your elbow and the bend of your arm are at the apex of the brace, and there is an equal length of the brace's fabric above and below your elbow.

    • 6

Fasten any closures on your brace, if applicable. Fasten them securely and evenly so that the brace is held firmly in place and feels uniformly secure without being tight or squeezing your arm.

    • 7

Bend your arm at the elbow. If any part of the brace pinches or causes you pain, adjust it slightly upwards or downwards on your arm until it is more comfortable.

    • 8

Wash your elbow brace regularly. It is important to wash away skin oils and dirt that could accumulate on the brace as a result of daily use in order to keep it sanitary. Wash the brace by hand in warm soapy water and hang it to dry; do not put your elbow brace in a washer or dryer as this will break down its elasticity.

    • 9

Use your elbow brace as directed. Follow the wearing instructions given to you by your physician, or wear it according to the guidelines described on the brace's instructional packaging.
