Injuries are part of the payment package for professional athletes. That means physical therapy is also part and parcel of a pro athlete's life. Finding a good physical therapist to treat those injuries can make all the difference in the rehabilitation process. Professional sports teams have their own staff of physical therapists, many of whom go out on their own. So even amateurs can have the benefit of a former or current pro sports therapist.

From Quick Guide: Pro Sports
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look up "Pro Sports Therapy" in your local Yellow Pages. Many local clinics use this in their name when affiliated with a professional sports therapist.

  2. Step 2

Request the therapist on staff who actually works with the professional athletes. Many times he may just be the owner of the clinic, who allows his name and credentials to be used, while employing new or inexperienced physical therapists to actually work on patients.

  3. Step 3

Interview physical therapists before beginning a program. Many therapists have had professional sports experience and bring that level of work to their current job, even though they may not promote that past experience. Make sure to check a therapist's credentials through the Society of Sports Specialists.

  4. Step 4

Call a local pro sports team and ask who they use for their team physical therapist. Also, ask them what kinds of products they use in their daily regimen.

  5. Step 5

Try to avoid injuries. Consider using a professional massage therapist for prevention of injuries.

  6. Step 6

Invest in the equipment used by the pro athletes. Use it to round out your own physical therapy regimen both for problems and prevention.
