From Quick Guide: Sports Clothing and Gear
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the vert equipment that you want to purchase. The typical vert skater would buy the following: helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and a skateboard. Optional gear can include wrist guards, gloves and even ramps.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want to buy new or used equipment.

  3. Step 3

Determine your size of protective gear by trying the equipment on in a store, or by checking size guides online or in catalogs. (To find the right size skateboard see "How to Buy a Skateboard and Protective Gear," under related eHows.)

  4. Step 4

Set a budget and stick to it.

  5. Step 5

Compare prices and buy your gear. You can buy vert gear many places, including online, in person, or through mail order. To buy online look at online auction sites, online classifieds and online skate shops.

To buy in person check out your local newspaper classifieds, local skate shops, skate shop chains at the mall and even Wal-mart.

To buy through mail-order, go online, select some free catalogs and have them mailed to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Decide if you want to build a skateboard or buy one (See "How to buy Skateboard Parts" and "How to buy a Skateboard and Protective Gear," under related eHows.)
  • It is crucial that your equipment fits properly. You can only skate safely in properly fitted gear. Also, comfort is important in order to pull off tricks successfully.
  • You must wear full protective gear. Unlike street skateboarding, in vert skateboarding even professionals wear pads and a helmet. It is not considered un-cool for a skater to protect themselves when riding vert.
  • Buying used gear may save you money, but only buy very gently used vert equipment. Anything that has been used too much may result in a safety hazard.
