Jazz dance is one of the foundation dance styles all dancers must master. It is a traditional dance style and the gear and clothing a dancer chooses needs to be appropriate.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check instructor expectations. Most dance schools and dance classes have dress code requirements. If you attend class and your clothes don't meet the dress code, you may be asked to sit out and watch.

  2. Step 2

Decide what you makes you comfortable. While staying within the dress code, decide what you feel comfortable wearing. You may have a choice in wearing shirts or a leotard. There are also choices between wearing tights, dance pants or dance shorts. Choose what works best for you.

  3. Step 3

Pick your color. In most jazz classes, you have a choice in the color of your leotard or tights. The most commonly accepted colors for leotards are black or other dark colors. The most commonly accepted colors for tights are black or a natural skin tone like nude or suntan.

  4. Step 4

Check the fit. Your teacher needs to see the lines and alignment of your body while you dance. Tights and leotards facilitate this requirement. If you choose jazz pants with a top, check that they are not too baggy and be prepared to change if your teacher asks you to.

  5. Step 5

Choose your shoes. There are many options for jazz shoes. For beginning students, use basic, split-sole or solid-sole jazz shoes. These shoes are either slip-ons or lace-ups. More advanced students may choose to wear heeled dance shoes called character shoes or sneaker-style shoes with split soles.

  6. Step 6

Shop around. Once you decide on your gear, go find it. There should be dance gear stores in your area. If not, the Internet is an option. If this is your first time as dance student, find a local store so you can try on the clothes. Dance gear fits differently and often can not be returned once purchased.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have options in colors and styles, don't get crazy. Dance schools are liberal places but you do not want to attract too much attention to yourself.
