Walk-a-thons are very popular. You can support a great cause while getting a terrific workout. A great idea is to start a walk-a-thon team either with family and friends, or at your place of business. Organizing a walk-a-thon team just takes a little planning and preparation. You can do it!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Registration forms

Step1
Contact the organization you would like to do the walk-a-thon for and ask them for materials. They will send you registration forms and information about the charity to give to all interested participants.
Step2
Register yourself and try to get several other people to register with you before you announce you have a team. The fact that you can say you already have some people signed up will probably get people excited and they'll want to join in on the fun.
Step3
Create a name for your team. Ask teammates for their input to get a great name for your team.
Step4
Set a team fund-raising goal. Have a chart where everyone can see it, or send out e-mail updates on everyone's progress.
Step5
Encourage friendly challenges between people to reach fund-raising goals. If you are doing this as a family, it could be adults vs. children; a corporate team could be department vs. department.
Step6
Arrange some prizes for targets reached. Have some of the prizes be not just for fund-raising goals, but for efforts being made. Examples of things to reward could be for sending out the most letters or emails to try to raise funds, or making the most telephone calls.
Step7
Create some weekly or bi-weekly walking dates where everyone can get together and take a walk. This is great exercise and will get everyone in shape to do the walk.

Tips & Warnings

  • Print up your own team t-shirts. You can incorporate your own logo or team slogan.
  • Many organizations now encourage you to post a walk-a-thon team website to help get donations. This will also make the collection process easier as people can donate online with a credit card.
  • Hold an "after" celebration of some type, like a lunch or a breakfast to enjoy reaching your goal and hard efforts as a team participating in the walk-a-thon. The more fun you make it for the team and the more team spirit you can create, the more people will be encouraged to do it again next year.
