As the season changes from summer to fall, we change our dressing habits too, whether to adjust to cooler weather or to simply express our individual style, and shoes are no exception. If your child is heading back to school, or if you just feel a need to put your own best foot forward, get some tips on how to buy shoes for fall.

Step 1

Make a list of how many pairs and what kinds of shoes you'll need to buy during your fall shopping spree. If buying shoes for back-to-school, remember to take into account shoes for daily wear as well as shoes for playtime. Also, most schools don't allow regular shoes to be worn in the gymnasium during gym class, so plan to buy one or more pairs of sneakers too.
Step 2

Take your children with you when you buy them new shoes for fall. It might be tempting to think that you're sure about the correct size shoes to buy for them, but kids have an amazing way of growing during summer vacation. Taking them along will avoid having to return ill-fitting shoes to the store, or worse--complaints about the style of shoes you purchased in the first place.
Step 3

Make sure a shoe salesperson measures your foot size (or that of your children) accurately. For most people, the left foot is slightly larger than the right and its measurement will indicate the correct shoe size.
Step 4

Save time and money by watching for circulars and sales announcements for shoes that come out by the armload just before the fall season, usually with the Sunday paper. Scanning these advertisements will allow you to see what the new trends are in fall shoes, as well as give you an idea of how much money to budget.
Step 5

Know what's in style for the new fall season. While certain trends tend to come and go, some styles always make the grade when it comes to shoes for fall. Loafers, mules and clogs, for instance, are usually the most popular styles for fall. Popular fabrics include suede, tweed and canvas, usually in deep, rich colors.

on 9/28/2008 I bought a pair of heeled, black, knee-hi boots when I was in college (about ten years ago!). People thought I was crazy. They died a few years ago, otherwise I'd still have them! I bought a new pair, nearly identical, that I still wear all the time. They are comfy and versatile and a classic style that lasts. Great article!
