How to Celebrate Los Dias De Los Muertos in Los Angeles

The observance known as All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day in much of the Western world is called Los Dias de los Muertos in Spanish-speaking regions. Translated as "Days of the Dead," this festival spans November 1 and November 2, and is the cause of much celebration in the vibrant Latino communities of Los Angeles.

  1. Step 1

    Rent a hotel room in downtown Los Angeles for central access to events being held throughout the city, if you are heading in from out of town. If you've never been to Los Angeles before, you'll soon learn that a rental car is also essential for getting around town.

  2. Step 2

    Head to the famous Hollywood Forever cemetery on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood for a hip annual celebration of Los Dias de los Muertos. Reenactments of ancient Mexican indigenous religious ceremonies are performed to the delight of the thick crowds.

  3. Step 3

    Celebrate Los Dias de los Muertos in authentic Latino style by visiting Olvera Street in downtown L.A. This historic district, the city's oldest, hosts legendary parties honoring Mexican and Latino festivals throughout the year. Its Days of the Dead parties are particularly renowned for their liveliness.

  4. Step 4

    Check out the Festival de la Gente. Typically held the weekend before Los Dias de los Muertos, when they do not fall on a weekend themelves, this street fair is famous for its giant paper mache creatures. It is an excellent place to take the whole family to celebrate the spooky holiday.   5. Step 5

    Explore the city, particularly the Latino communities in East Los Angeles and to the immediate south, west and south-west of the downtown core. Countless restaurants, clubs, bars and communities sponsor activities and parties to celebrate Los Dias de los Muertas.
