The Burning Man festival is rooted in seemingly minor interaction when a few friends burned a wooden "man" on a California beach on the Summer Solstice in 1986. It has grown to a wild celebration of radical self-expression and self-reliance, drawing 35,000 participants to the playa of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada for several days around Labor Day weekend each year. In the process, it has become a tough ticket.
