Find Authentic German Activities in Hays, Kansas
Step1
Bring children along to participate in Kinderspiele, or German children's games. The most popular game for kids at Hays Oktoberfest is the recitation of the Wuensching, or the New Year's wish, for prizes. Children between 5 and 15 can memorize the wish on the Midwest Deutsche Oktoberfest website to receive their prize (see Resources below).
Step2
Enter the Hays Oktoberfest celebration for free throughout the entire weekend. The organizers of this large Kansas festival allow the public in for free to help people celebrate German culture without spending too much money. There are plenty of food and souvenir vendors where you can purchase goods to celebrate German culture.
Step3
Attend the traditional Catholic Mass with polka music that is held on Sunday morning. This religious service is unlike others because of the lively polka performances of groups like the Country Dutchman and The Catherine Choir throughout the service. Make your way to the big tent early on Sunday morning to get a good seat for this energetic Mass.
Step4
Enjoy the traditional brerocks prepared by Oktoberfest organizers and distributed throughout the grounds. Brerocks are a loose meat sandwich made out of beef, pork or chicken that includes cabbage and sharp cheese for a good flavor profile.
Step5
Head over to the handmade booths to purchase authentic German souvenirs. Fine quality items like beersteins and wooden cookoo clocks are favorites at this midwest celebration.
Step6
Remember your Oktoberfest experience in Hays, Kansas for years to come with a commemorative mug. The mug typically has a logo and information from that year's festivities. Organizers sell these mugs for a low price to help you celebrate Germany's traditional beers at the festival and at home.
