How to Learn to Draw Flowers

Drawing can be a fascinating hobby or career, and flowers are a timeless subject of many drawings. Drawing flowers is a way to learn about and appreciate nature while developing your artistic talents.

Instructions

1. Observe flowers in nature before attempting to draw them. Take note of the shapes and colors that make up the flowers you want to draw. Notice how shadows give the image depth.

2. Rehearse drawing the shapes needed to create your flowers. Practice drawing ovals, circles, triangles, diamonds, squares and other shapes. Think about what shapes you can put together to make imaginative and realistic flowers.

3. Decide what kind of tools you need to draw flowers. An artist can use markers, pencils, crayons, oil pastels or chalk to draw lifelike flowers on a variety of surfaces.

4. Use two circles to draw basic cartoon flowers. To begin, draw one circle with another larger circle around it. Color the small circle to be the middle of the flower, and the larger circle to represent the flower's "petals."

5. Draw simple tulip flowers by using a semi-circle and three triangles. Make the semi-circles in the shape of a bowl and draw three triangles on top of the semi-circles to give the tulips their shape. Color them with vibrant colors and include green stems.

6. Consider using colored pencils to draw flowers with detail. Use several different shades of each color on the petals and use different shades of green on the leaves to make your flowers more realistic.

7. Practice how to draw flowers every day until you are happy with the results. It may take several days or weeks of practice before you are able to draw realistic looking flowers.
