How to Build a Garage

Although originally meant as a building for cars, a garage now serves other functions, including as a workshop, an office or storage for equipment and tools. Some garages are built attached, with a door leading into the house, while others are built to stand alone, usually behind the house. It is important to build your garage according to regulations of your city and be sure to practice safe work habits.

Instructions

  1. Build a Garage

    • 1

Prepare the materials you will need. In addition to your general building tools, you will need separate materials for your foundation, for framing your wall, for your roofing and for your windows and doors.

    • 2

Lay your foundation. This involves pouring concrete into a prepared wooden form. Be sure that your slab is square, the sill plates are level and use good quality stocks.

    • 3

Lay out the wall. Check with your city residential zoning board regarding the required distance between the supporting studs. Studs are usually either 16 inches or 24 inches apart.

    • 4

Nail and position the wall. Be sure that the wall pieces are cut correctly and are in the proper position before you begin to nail them together. You will need a friend to help hold the pieces in place and several friends to lift and position the wall.

    • 5

Frame the roof. Depending on your experience and preference, choose between using prefabricated trusses for your roof or constructing your roof from scratch. You can order the prefabricated trusses from a manufacturer through your local hardware store.

    • 6

Apply sheathing. Choices for sheathing include plywood, particle board and wafer-board. You may prefer to use plywood or wafer-board sheathing due to their ease of application and lower prices.

    • 7

Install windows. Before you begin, make sure that the window you have ordered is the right type and that it has no damages. Also, check that the opening for the window is the right size so the window will fit properly.

    • 8

Apply siding and soffit. Be sure to use nails that will not rust. Keep in mind that the rafter ends have to be straight for the soffit to fit properly.

    • 9

Complete the construction by applying the roofing felt and asphalt shingles. Be sure the sheathing is clean and dry before applying the felt.
