How to Do a Scissors Move in Soccer

As you run down the soccer field dribbling the ball, you will always get the attention of the defenders. A good fake with the soccer ball can make defenders change their running paths and even make them fall down. The scissors move should make the defender you are up against lunge to block the ball, but miss it when the ball does not go where he thinks it will.

Instructions

  1. Do a Scissors Move

    • 1

Place the ball on the soccer field to practice the scissors move. Although the ball will be moving when you're playing a real game, during practice, you should start with it being stationary.

    • 2

Start dribbling the ball down the field. Instead of alternating feet in dribbling, use only your left foot. Your kicks should be short and concise, allowing you to keep full control of the ball.

    • 3

Plant your left foot firmly on the ground next to the ball. This will further give the impression you're about to make a regular right-foot kick.

    • 4

Approach the ball with the outside (right side) of your right foot.

    • 5

Swing your right foot completely around the soccer ball, without touching it. Your right foot will land on the opposite side of the ball, placing almost in between your feet.

    • 6

Arc your left foot slightly so it makes contact with the ball. You should aim at the ball with the outside (left side) of your left foot.

    • 7

Kick the ball gently to the left. Your kick will need to be relatively soft, as you'll need to regain control of the ball immediately to continue dribbling it down the field.

    • 8

Run toward the soccer ball as if you are going to kick it normally, with your right foot. You'll need to get a decent amount of speed to make the move appear fluid.

    • 9

Switch feet when you're able to do the scissors move proficiently with your right foot. Especially if you are naturally right-handed, switching to your left foot will give you more of a challenge.

Tips & Warnings

  • The scissors move is best performed when you have a defensive player directly in front of you. Using it when the defense is still several yards away will make it ineffective.

  • Don't overuse the scissors move because you can do it well. Mix up your moves and fakes to keep your opponents guessing all of the time.
