Food Not Bombs was born in the 1980s, when a group of people protested against the nuclear plant in Cambridge, Massachusetts by spray-painting "Money for food, not bombs" around the city. It is an organization dedicated to providing free food to the hungry. Members collect surplus food from grocery stores and restaurants and serve prepared meals to hungry people in local places. This organization is also involved in fighting against poverty in the community. It is concerned about the welfare of immigrants and is anti-war. Read on to learn more.

Learn the Philosophy of Food Not Bombs

  1. Step 1

Recycle food. Food Not Bombs states that, due to capitalism, a lot of food is going to waste. It believes that if this food was collected, it would be enough to feed every hungry person worldwide.

  2. Step 2

Decide by consensus. Every member of Food Not Bombs has a right to be heard. Each person has an equal share in both work and decision-making.

  3. Step 3

Practice nonviolence. Food Not Bombs believes that war can be avoided. It states that world hunger can be eradicated if the government uses the money for war on food instead.

  4. Step 4

Support vegetarianism. Food Not Bombs supports vegan food because it is healthy and does not involve any loss of life.

  5. Volunteer at Food Not Bombs

  6. Step 1

Visit the Food Note Bombs website to find a chapter near you (see Resources below). The website lists contact information for each chapter as well as the days, hours and locations of service. There are about 200 chapters worldwide.

  7. Step 2

Look for address where food will be served. Food Not Bombs encourages everyone to just show up on meal days to help. Contact your local chapter for updated information on location and time.

  8. Step 3

Arrive in good time to get involved. You can help with cooking the food, serving it or clearing up and washing the dishes after the meal.

  9. Step 4

Volunteer to help increase donations. Food Not Bombs welcomes a donation of $1 from each interested philanthropist. The money goes towards providing food for the homeless and hungry, growing food in Africa, providing free medical assistance and organizing marches for peace, justice and animal rights.

  10. Step 5

Help to start a Food Not Bombs chapter. Food Not Bombs wants to help as many people as possible and can do this with more local volunteer groups. Visit the website to learn more about how to start a local group (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Food Not Bombs is not a charity and does not have a nonexempt tax status. However, if you are interested in making a donation, the organization can help you obtain a tax deduction.
