Visit the breeder in person before you decide to buy a wolf. Ask questions about the way they weaned the wolf cubs from their mother to order to ensure successful socialization. Find out if the cubs have had the proper contact with people of both sexes, and with other dogs, which will help them to have less behavioral issues as they get older.

Join an online discussion forum for owners of exotic pets, especially wolves, and ask about their experiences in locating pet wolf breeders.

Use online resources such as the website for The Pet Directory to locate breeders for wolves and wolfdogs (see Resources below). While the number of wolf dogs breeders greatly outnumber the pure wolf breeders, most of the wolfdog breeders can give you referrals.

Ensure that you have made all of the preparations before you decide to buy a pet wolf or wolfdog from a breeder. This includes finding out about laws in your area concerning the ownership of wolves and wolfdogs, building appropriate quarters for the wolf once you get it home and securing a veterinarian who will agree to treat a wolf or wolfdog.
