Step 1
Ask your breeder whether they have a recommendation for a vet in your area. Even if you are shipping your pet wallaroo from out of state, the breeder may know of a vet in your region. If you live close to your breeder, he may be able to provide basic health care.
-
Step 2
Call a local vet with whom you already have a relationship. While your vet may not have direct experience treating wallaroos, she may be willing to learn. She may also be able to refer you to a vet that does have experience.
-
Step 3
Speak to the trainers and medical staff at your local zoo. Smaller zoos may use off site vets, but at the very least, the zoo should be able to recommend you to someone qualified to treat your pet wallaroo.
-
Step 4
Contact your local humane society. If wallaroos are legal in your state, the humane society should be able to help you locate a vet.
-
Step 5
Visit a wildlife sanctuary if there is one in your region. They may have a vet on site that will treat your pet wallaroo, but they will definitely be able to refer you to an exotic pet vet.
-
Step 6
Seek out other wallaroo owners in online macropod forums, which are always a wealth of information. You may find other people who own wallaroos in your area that may refer you to a vet.
-
Step 7
Find out whether your vet has emergency hours. You will need to locate a vet who has weekend and late hours so that he can treat your pet during non-peak hours. You may have to travel to a nearby town for an emergency vet that can treat your wallaroo.
-
Step 8
Brush up on your wallaroo knowledge before you speak to a vet, so that you can better judge whether she is qualified to treat your pet. One basic that all vets should know is that antibiotics cannot be given orally.
