Even small monkey breeds require a vast amount of space to live happily. To provide adequate housing for a pet monkey you will need a large, well-ventilated area and a professionally built cage. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bed
  • Disinfectant
  • Shade (for outdoor cages)
  • Lighting
  • Non-toxic plants
  • Heavy gauge wire
  • Pond
  • Toys

    Build Indoor Monkey Housing

  1. Step 1

Build your cage larger than you think it needs to be. The larger the cage, the happier your monkey will be. Monkeys especially like being able to climb up high, so build accordingly.

  2. Step 2

Opt for at least 12 gauge wire to house your monkey. Chicken wire is not strong enough to provide adequate housing for even small monkeys.

  3. Step 3

Build in a safety entrance to keep the monkey from escaping. Safety entrances typically use two separate doors to prevent your monkey from being able to unlock the cage himself.

  4. Step 4

Choose a well ventilated location. Even a frequently cleaned cage can become odorous in the wrong indoor location.

  5. Step 5

Install natural lighting. Primates need natural light in order for their skeletons to grow properly. Full-spectrum light fixtures can supplement natural light.

  6. Step 6

Clean the housing with a mild disinfectant daily. Monkeys get sick from unsanitary conditions just like humans do.

  7. Step 7

Build the floor of the cage from wire as well so that waste can fall to the ground. Raise the floor off the ground to make cleaning easier and to keep your pet from touching waste.

  8. Create Adequate Outdoor Housing

  9. Step 1

Select a shady location for an outdoor pet monkey enclosure. At least half of the cage should be shaded for most of the day.

  10. Step 2

Create a heated sleeping area. Pet monkeys need to be able to find a warm bed during cold weather.

  11. Step 3

Provide a pond for your pet monkey. Monkeys love to play and bathe. Providing a pond for your monkey will help him stay happy and healthy.

  12. Step 4

Place a selection of plants in the monkey enclosure. Plants provide visual interest and things for your monkey to play with. Add new plants on occasion to add some variety to your monkey's enclosure.

  13. Step 5

Include plenty of toys for your pet monkey to enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider hiring a professional to create your monkey habitat. Monkeys are very smart, and easily escape from homemade cages.
  • Keep your monkey housing out of the reach of children. Monkeys are wild animals and they bite.
  • Monkeys can live for 40 years or more and suffer from changing hands. Be sure you are ready for a long commitment when considering buying a pet monkey.
