Locating the right pet llama breeder through the proper channels is essential in order to receive a healthy animal with the proper disposition. By using the right resources, you will be able to locate a llama (or two, preferably) that will give you many years of companionship. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Locate a Pet Llama Breeder

  1. Step 1

Attend shows and competitions that promote llamas as pets. Many of these events, especially the ones sponsored by the Alpaca and Llama Show Association (ALSA), feature exhibitions from breeders so that potential llama owner can ask questions and spend time with the animals.

  2. Step 2

Find about other resources you can use to locate a llama breeder, such as livestock auctions, llama brokers or even classified ads on the Internet. Most llama experts agree, however, that buying a llama directly from a farm usually yields the best results.

  3. Step 3

Visit the llama farms once you have compiled a list of breeders. Ask the breeders as many questions as possible so that there will be no surprises later on.

  4. Step 4

Use the International Llama Registry (ILR) to guarantee the pedigree of any llama you wish to buy, or to register a young llama. Log onto the official ILR website for more information (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Read websites and magazines devoted to owning pet llamas. Most of these resources, such as LlamaDirectory.com accept advertisements and classified ads from llama breeders around the country (see Resources below).

  6. Step 6

Educate yourself about the care of a pet llama to ensure that you will be adequately prepared for its arrival, especially when it comes to proper feeding and grooming standards and medical care. The Llamapedia website is an excellent resource for anyone who is thinking about buying a pet llama (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • Before you set out to buy a pet llama, determine if you have the type of property where you can properly care for it. The property must be zoned for livestock, and must be large enough so that the animal can properly graze (3 to 5 llamas can generally survive on each acre of grass). In addition, you should have a structure that can shelter the animals from harsh weather conditions.
