Learn How to Agility Train a Pet Dingo

  1. Step 1

Understand that agility training is not the same thing as teaching your pet dingo how to sit or stay. Agility training is an intense, high-energy performance in which the dog undergoes a series of obstacles and tasks to complete in the least amount of time possible. In fact, agility competition was modeled after horse jumping in England and became a popular sport for dogs in the late 1970s.

  2. Step 2

Be aware that it is illegal to introduce a pet dingo into the show or competition circuit in Australia and elsewhere, whether agility trained or not. Therefore, accept the fact that this is an activity to be enjoyed exclusively by yourself, family and your pet dingo.

  3. Step 3

Provide a secure enclosed pen on your property to agility train your pet dingo. In fact, in many parts of Australia you are bound to comply with certain regulations that your yard or outdoor exercise area is escape-free.

  4. Step 4

Use a leash when you first begin to agility train your pet dingo. You will be running with the dog to guide her to perform the activity that you want her to do until she can do it on her own.

  5. Step 5

Set up an obstacle course to agility train your pet dingo, such as climbing and walking obstacles. Keep the course simple at first, increasing with difficulty as your pet dingo proceeds through training.

  6. Step 6

Arrange a set of poles to train your dog to weave through. Generally, all dogs are trained to enter the first weave with their left shoulder and then continue alternating through each pole until the end. Note that this method of agility training is one of the most difficult to master for most dogs.

  7. Step 7

Reward your pet dingo handsomely with verbal praise and a bit of kibble when she performs well. This must be done immediately after the desired action for best results.

Tips & Warnings
  • Attempting to agility train any dog takes significant patience and determination for any dog, most certainly for a pet dingo.
  • Use only positive reinforcement techniques while you agility train your pet dingo, or she may become skittish and refuse to participate.
