Wiccan ceremonies require a lot of preparation, both in the external act of gathering supplies and in the internal act of getting grounded and mentally preparing for rituals. Each coven has its own rules as to what members should do to prepare for a ceremony. Solo practitioners usually select their favorite grounding methods by researching and trying out different rituals until they find some that work for them. Read on to learn more.

    Get Ready for a Ceremony

  1. Step 1

Clean your body. Special herbal baths are a common way for Wiccans to get rid of negative and residual energy carried out from the day's activities. Many Wiccans use their own herbal preparations or buy specialized mixes for ritual cleaning baths.

  2. Step 2

Change into clothes that you have designated for Wiccan ceremonies. This is done as a way to leave the worries and problems of the day behind and start anew.

  3. Step 3

Learn to cast a circle, which is a personal sacred space in which to safely conduct a ceremony. A circle is usually cast by drawing a pentagram in the air in the four corners (north, south, east and west) and reciting some special words asking for the protection of the goddess during the ritual.

  4. Step 4

Prepare a sacred space. Most Wiccans have either a small altar permanently set up or a set of ritual items they use during ceremonies. Candles, bells, incense and statues of different gods and goddesses are carefully chosen for ceremonies, as well as every day practice.

  5. Step 5

Know beforehand what you wish to accomplish during the ceremony. You might choose to ask for health, help a friend or simply connect with the Goddess.

  6. Step 6

Find alternatives for ceremonies away from home. When preparing for a ceremony away from home or in a place where water is not readily available, many Wiccans use incense or meditation to clean up bad energy. Burning sage is another popular method of spiritual cleansing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many Wiccan practitioners prefer to use special clothes during ceremonies. Buy a robe or some loose clothes for ceremonial use.
  • If you have an artistic talent, share it with your coven. Many Wiccan groups prepare for a ceremony by drumming or singing. This is done as a way to draw up energy within the circle.
  • Care for your health in preparation for Wiccan ceremonies. Because rituals tend to be emotionally and physically draining, Wiccans prefer not to perform ceremonies when they are ill or under severe stress. For the same reason, it's a Wicca tradition to eat after rituals as a way to regain energy.
