The Law of Return, also known as the Three-Fold Law, refers to a passage in the Wicca Rede poem. Basically, the Three-Fold Law claims that whatever you do will come back to you threefold. This not only refers to the things you do that affect people, but also to the general energy you put out into the world. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Follow the Law Of Return

Step1
Investigate the origin of the Three-Fold Law, which is normally attributed to Gerald Gardner, the creator of the Gardnerian branch of Wicca. He first quoted the law in one of his books, noting that he had heard it from ancient oral traditions.
Step2
Remember that Wiccans believe in freedom of choice. As long as you choose to do your best, you should expect the same in return.
Step3
Understand the exceptions when you follow the rules. The Law of Return refers to harm done intentionally. According to Wiccan beliefs, harming others involuntarily does not lead to bad karma.
Step4
Understand that the law is based on the biological principle that everything is connected to everything else, meaning that any action somebody takes will have a reaction in the universe. Wiccans take this a step further, believing that even negative energy has an impact on nature and the world around us.
Step5
Study the concept of karma (past actions determine what we go through in the present) when researching Wicca, as karma plays a major role in Wiccan practices and beliefs.
Step6
Refer to the Wicca Rede poem to learn about the Law of return. Find it in its entirety at Wicca.com (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you decide to follow the Law of Return, read up on the subject. There are several variations and interpretations of the law, and it's up to you to decide which one fits you best.
  • It's up to you to adopt the Law of Return into your unique belief system. Many Wiccans simply believe in an extension of the Rede and accept the idea of not harming others because of respect, not out of fear of retribution from the universe.
  • Never use the Law of Return as a way to inspire fear or control the actions of others. This is against Wiccan beliefs.
