How to Work as a Medium

Like a psychic, a medium can see events in a person's past, present and future. However, unlike a psychic, a medium can also see into the spirit realm. Mediums can communicate with spirits of deceased people and can give messages to their earthly relatives and friends. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

  1. Train To Be a Medium

    • 1

Take a class at a New Age institution. The Learning Light Foundation, for instance, offers mediumship classes (see Resources below).

    • 2

Train with an established medium. Look for an experienced medium that offers classes on mediumship or search for one who is willing to serve as your mentor.

    • 3

Follow directions in a book to train yourself to become a medium. For instance, read "So You Want To Be A Medium?: A Down to Earth Guide" by Rose Vanden Eynden (see Resources below).

    Work As a Medium

    • 4

Watch an established medium at work. Consider making an appointment for yourself or accompanying a friend to her appointment. Watching how the session is conducted will help prepare you for receiving your own clients.

    • 5

Choose a location for your business. Are you able to rent an office? If you plan to work from home, be sure to use a room in which you will not be disturbed.

    • 6

Set your rates. Decide on an amount that you are comfortable charging per minute or hour that will cover your overhead expenses. Check with other mediums to get a sense of acceptable going rates.

    • 7

Think about how you will accept payment: check, cash, or credit card? Decide what you are comfortable accepting and make the necessary arrangements.

    • 8

Advertise your services. Use local papers, post flyers around your neighborhood or use direct mail. Consider advertising via word of mouth through friends and family.

    • 9

Decide whether you will need an assistant. An assistant can help by taking calls, making appointments, keeping track of bills and payments received, as well as help promote your services.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider offering a few free or discounted sessions in the beginning to attract clients. Word of mouth is an effective way to help your business grow faster in the beginning.

  • When your business begins to grow, keep track of how your new clients heard about your business. To reduce your advertising expenses, use the more popular advertising method and discontinue the others.

  • Keep in mind that becoming a medium will take time, no matter what method you choose. It cannot happen instantly.
