Perform a Feather Step

A feather step contains 3 or 4 steps used in the international style foxtrot dance. Feathering, as it is popularly called, is an action that is fundamental not only in the foxtrot but in other dances as well. Many moves in the slow foxtrot were later adapted into the waltz. Instructions

  1. Begin at the Starting Point

    • 1

Know the regular step count of the slow-slow-quick-quick. This is done in a circular motion as a square step and consists of the swaying of legs during certain steps.

    • 2

Choose your music. To perform a feather step, you will need some form of flowing, perky and quick rhythm music. Popular music to perform this style of dance combines slow and quick tempos together.

    • 3

Realize that there are several variations of the foxtrot. Faster foxtrots become the swing dance or the jitterbug and are known as a "one-step" or "quickstep."

Perform a Feather Step for Women

    • 4

Count "1-2" and put your left foot backwards and center your body.

    • 5

Use a quickstep and count "3" while your right foot moves to the side, swaying through to the left (instead of a lift and place down). Your right shoulder should lead the way.

    • 6

Swing your left foot back on a quick count "4."

Perform a Feather Step for Men

    • 7

Step forward on the right foot and count "1-2."

    • 8

Take a forward step onto the left toe and count "3."

    • 9

Lift your foot and sway it to the ride side of your partner and count "4."

Tips & Warnings

  • Be graceful in all your movements. Since this can be a quick dance, it is easy to forget to flow from one movement to another.

  • Be sure to turn your body position with the direction of your sway to maintain balance.

  • When you end the feather step, it usually leads to the beginning of the promenade.

  • This dance is harder that at a first glance. Take time to prepare and practice before hitting the dance floor.

  • Don't make your stride too long when swaying outside of your partner (men). Other wise your partner will not be able to extend back with her legs.

  • Quick dancing will dehydrate the body. Be sure to drink plenty of liquids while practicing, preferable something with electrolytes.
