Things You'll Need:
- Dance music and space to practice
- Ballroom dance reference material
-
Step 1
Learn the difference between the "smooth" and Latin styles of ballroom dancing. Smooth includes waltz, tango and foxtrot. Latin includes rumba, merengue and cha cha. Consult a reference such as "The Complete Book of Ballroom Dancing" by Richard Stephenson at Amazon (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Get a feel for the different dances and steps so you won't be overwhelmed by the variety. Watch ballroom dancing competitions on television or sample a DVD such as "Ballroom 10" at Amazon (see Resources below).
-
Step 3
Decide where you fit in the ballroom scene before you sign up for lessons. Are you looking for casual or competitive skill? How much time and money do you want to invest?
-
Step 1
Locate a studio that offers group lessons so you will learn from a variety of partners.
-
Step 2
Do what the stars do. Sign up and take dance lessons, practicing often, even daily, to improve the skills you learn in class.
