How to Sign up for Couples Dance Lessons
Some pastimes are better when shared, and dance is definitely one of them. Social dance is part art, sport and enjoyable activity, making it a great candidate for shared fun and learning, because there is something for everyone. With the wide range of couples dances to try, from waltz to tango and two-step to foxtrot, dance lessons easily keep couples interested and excited to hit the floor.

Prepare to Dance
-
1
Set goals first. Ask yourself why you want to dance (socialization, exercise or to gain a skill) and how accomplished you wish to become.
-
2
Select a dance category, such as country/Western, hip-hop, ballroom or Latin. Some studios offer all of these, but some will specialize. Use a sampler DVD like "Couples Ultimate Dance Sampler" starring Shawn Trautman at Amazon to help you choose (see Resources below).
-
3
Get in shape. Get to know the dance discipline you're pursuing so you know what it will take, physically. Read a book such as "Ballroom Dancing" by Alex Moore at Amazon to give you the big picture (see Resources below).
-
4
Find a local studio. Search online or by phone to locate a dance studio, community center, college or private teacher that offers the style of dance you're interested in.

Go solo or as the "better half" of a couple. You will change partners frequently in class in order to learn to respond to a variety of dancers.
-
2
Sign up for classes where you feel the instructors are well-trained and a good fit for you. They'll let you know about any class prerequisites, such as dress code.
-
3
Practice in between sessions. You'll internalize what you've learned through repetition and be able to build on that knowledge.

Tips & Warnings
If studying with a partner, sit down and talk about your goals before you sign up for classes.
Couples won't necessarily dance together at lessons, so be prepared for this. In fact, it's considered rude to monopolize a partner!
Yes, even ballroom dancing is strenuous exercise. Build your flexibility and cardio capacity before beginning lessons.
Dance lessons can add up, so make sure you understand the commitment of time and effort before investing your money.
