Toprock breakdancing styles include pop and lock, glides, the robot and fancy footwork. Downrock moves focus on making different parts of the body come in contact with the ground, such as the backspin, six-step, head spin and windmills. Breakdancers use a combination of toprock and downrock, and transitions are needed to between the two, such as the impressive thread drop.

Things You'll Need:

  • Large open space to practice in
  • Old Mattress

    Practice a Thread Drop

  1. Step 1

Take out an old mattress and place it in an open area. Practice the thread drop in the middle of the mattress until you can land it consistently.

  2. Step 2

Toprock until you are ready to transition with the thread drop.

  3. Step 3

Lift and then grab the foot on your non-dominant leg with your dominate hand. Your dominate leg is probably the same side as your dominate hand. For example, your right leg is dominant so you grab your left leg with your right hand.

  4. Step 4

Bounce up and down a few times on your right (dominant) leg.

  5. Step 5

Jump high and bring your right leg (dominant) leg up through the circle made with your left leg and right arm. This is the thread (like threading a needle).

  6. Step 6

Land on your right leg while you continue holding your toe.

  7. Step 7

Bend your right (dominant) leg to lower your body to the ground. You should be crouching on the ground. Don't stay in this position too long or you will lose your momentum.

  8. Step 8

Move into a downrock move or jump back up for more toprock action. The more you can combine moves with the thread drop, the more impressive your routine can be.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look at garage sales for an old mattress you can use to practice with. You may even have a neighbor who will give you a mattress just to get rid of it. The larger the mattress the better.
  • If you are still not sure which leg is dominant, fall forward and see which leg is the first one you step out with to keep from falling down.
  • Practice standing straight while holding your leg with the opposite hand to work on your balance.
  • Be careful learning the thread drop, as you can seriously hurt yourself if you do this drop with improper technique.
  • Prepare yourself to practice hard for many hours before you will impress everyone around with the thread drop.
