Breakdancing has gone through several different phases over the years and almost died out during the mid 1990s. New breakdancers introduced their own versions of this popular dance style in the early years of the new millennium for a resurgence of breakdancing. Today, it is easier than ever to look all of the latest and greatest moves possible in breakdancing by taking lessons online.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mirror
  • Large open space to practice in
  • Large cardboard box or wood floor to practice on
  1. Step 1

Look for websites offering video instructions. You may get written instructions as well, such as those from Darin Carter (see Resources below). You will learn much faster by watching techniques and listening to descriptions of those techniques.

  2. Step 2

Look for breakdancing lessons online to get some quick lessons. Look for teachers who break each move down into the most basic movements possible.

  3. Step 3

Take advantage of opportunities to save online video breakdancing lessons to your computer to watch any time you want.

  4. Step 4

Replay each section of a video lesson until you can copy the movements of the teacher. For example, when learning a pop and lock move, replay the video for each pop until you can make the pop successfully.

  5. Step 5

Slow down and take your time learning each move well before you move on to another move. If you practice sloppy moves, you will get very good at dancing sloppily and not improve your technique.

  6. Step 6

Take your practice to a mirror to see how well you are moving with the music and how smooth you look.

  7. Step 7

Use a video camera occasionally to record your breakdancing so you can see how well you are dancing and where improvements can be made.

  8. Step 8

Make up your own variations to the moves you learn when you take breakdancing lessons online to create your own unique style.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear old clothes with enough room to move easily but not so much room the clothes get in your way.
  • Be prepared to sweat. Have plenty of water available to drink while you practice.
  • Start with lessons matching your skill level and don't jump too far ahead. Master beginner basics before moving to advanced techniques.
  • Don't expect to become a great breakdancer over night. You will need many hours of practice to make your breakdance moves smooth as silk.
  • Don't breakdance in an enclosed area, as you could hurt yourself and damage property in the process.
