How to Create, Edit or Delete User Groups in Solaris
Solaris is an operating system that gives users a tremendous amount of flexibility when working with user groups and accounts. Administrators can easily create, edit or delete groups whenever they need to. Using the "admintool" command or the GUI (Graphical User Interface), anyone can control access to the system, including the ability to create, edit or delete groups of users.

1
Type "# admintool" from the shell prompt to bring up the admintool menu. Note that once the admintools menu loads, it is automatically set to the add/create/delete/modify menu. You will only need to switch to this menu if you have changed the defaults.
-
2
Click "Browse" in the menu options to bring up the different ways to look at the current user accounts.
-
-
3
Click on the "Groups" menu option from the "Browse" section. This will display the current list of groups registered within Solaris.
-
4
Click the "Edit" menu tab from the Groups section of the admintool window. You will be able to choose from the three options: create, edit or delete groups.
-
5
Choose the option that applies and fill in the blanks as they appear in the window that opens. For example, if you chose "Create," you would need to enter a new group name, as well as the names of each member of the group.
-
6
Edit a group using the "Edit" command. From the edit menu, you may change the group's name, as well as the names of the members who have access to the group.
-
7
Delete a current group in Solaris using the "Delete" command. Deleting a user group will reset access for users in that group to an individual basis.

Tips & Warnings
Understand that Solaris features a number of different methods for achieving the same task. You can use the GUI for just about all of the main functions of the operating system, with very few exceptions. Using the GUI also reduces the risk of dealing with typos for extended command lines.
Be aware that you cannot delete the admin account under typical circumstances. The only way to delete the admin account is to create a second admin account and delete the first.
Home directories for any user groups you modify do not change unless you specifically change them using the -d and/or -m commands.
