How to Update Solaris

The Solaris operating system, from Sun Microsystems, is free to users and constantly supported. Sun goes to great lengths to update Solaris, both to correct bugs and increase functionality. It is easy to update Solaris directly from the Sun Microsystems website.

      Start your computer and log in to Solaris as a system administrator. Non-administrators are not permitted to install updates.

      Access the Solaris shell. From the shell, you will be able to determine which version of the Solaris 10 operating system you are using.

      Type "percent showrev -p" at the shell prompt (replace the word "percent" with a percent symbol). This will display the current list of patches available. From this list, you will be able to determine which patches are necessary for your copy of Solaris 10.

      Access the Sun website (see Resources below). The Sun website hosts all Solaris patches in one place.

      Examine the list of patches on the Sun website, and take note of the version numbers of the patches you need. The final two digits following the "-" is the current patch version number. For example, "123456-07" is the seventh version of the "123456" patch.

      Pick a patch cluster from the Solaris Patch Cluster website if your system needs a high number of updates at once. This makes it much easier to update your system without having to repeat the task more than a dozen times.

      Click on a link to an available patch to download it. It will save to a default file folder, but you might want to set it to save to the desktop. This will make it easier to find when it's time to complete the update.

      Double-click on the patch once it has finished downloading. This will begin the installation process and complete the update.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always restart your system after you install an update. This will verify the installation and enable the changes and enhancements the update features.

  • Ensure that you are installing the correct patches when working with Solaris 10. Some of the available updates are actually for earlier versions of the operating system. If you update your system using one of those patches, you will actually revert your system files to older versions.
